Ecology and Biodiversity
Only 2.5% of our ancient forest cover survives, and just 7% of this is classes as in good condition. Once vast meadows have shrunk by 7.5 million acres, while 90% of wetlands and seagrass meadows have been lost in the last century alone. Intensive agriculture, urbanisation, pollution and persecution means that many of our most iconic species are in rapid decline, with 1 in 5 British mammals threatened with extinction. Today, we are among the most nature depleted countries in the world.
Wildlife in the UK is in danger.
Swale Borough Councils' Biodiversity Action Plan and Climate and Ecological Emergency Action Plan aims to tackle this crisis locally, but everyone still has a part to play in protecting our wildlife. Small actions we can take in our gardens and communities from participating in No Mow May, planting your garden with native plant species, or creating a small wildlife pond the size of a plate can all have a huge impact.
